Tropical Flowers by Charles: About Kauai

Tropical Flowers by Charles is a tropical flower and exotics farm on the Hawaiian island of Kauai. It is located near the U.S. Tropical Botanical Garden chartered by the U.S. Congress, and the beautiful Hule'ia River. The wandering Hule'ia not only provides water for the garden farm, it also creates the tropical paradise in which our flowers grow.

The Hule'ia River begins on the ridges above Mt. Kahili and the southwestern slopes of Mt. Wai'aleale, the central volcano of the island and the wettest spot on earth. The area around Mt. Wai'aleale receives more rain per year than any other land area on the planet! Beside the streams flowing from this area, the well-watered and nourished land is warm and moist, the perfect site for growing exotic tropical plants.

The Hule'ia River blesses and nourishes about 10 miles of 'aina (land), flowing through Charles' garden farm and Kauai's wildlife ecosystem as it wends its way to meet the sea at Nawiliwili. The Hule'ia river is also in the watershed or  ahupua'a of Mt. Ha'iku. This area, including that covered by Charles' farm, is steeped in ancient history, legend and myth.

Mt. Ha'upu stands as a sentinel above this area. It is still considered sacred by some native Hawaiians. Carved beside the Hule'ia River, the Alekoko fishponds are the site of Hawaiians' ancient homesites and burial areas in the hills. These areas have been revered and made famous by the many Hawaiian  na oli and  na mele (chants and songs) written in praise of the area's beauty, and they tell the ancient stories of Hawaiian deities.

Charles cultivates his flowers and exotic tropical hardwood trees with resepect for the 'aina. He uses all handwork and tools, and no insecticides or other chemicals are placed on any of Charles' living plants.

After the flower and tropical foliage stems are cut, they are rinsed in soap and water to remove any dirt.

Charles carefully inspects each stem and flower by hand to make sure they are of the best caliber. All of this care is taken to ensure the highest quality stems are shipped, and satisfy all U.S. Department of Agriculture requirements for shipping plant products to the U.S. Mainland from Hawaii.

Growing and shipping only the highest quality flowers and foliage has earned Charles a host of regular customers.

We invite you to experience the beauty of Kauai with a selection of tropical flowers and exotics that have been nourished by the Hule'ia River and prepared with great care by Charles. Order a bouquet for yourself or a loved one—or dress up a special event—today!
